You tapped the phone icon in a companion app, expected it to ring, and got a recorded voice note instead. That is the most common surprise in this part of the category. AI girlfriend app voice calls are advertised far more often than they are offered, and the two features sold under one handset icon — a reply you press play on, and a live conversation with your microphone open — are priced completely differently. Here is how to tell them apart before you hand over a card.
What AI girlfriend app voice calls actually are
There are two features here, and most apps have only the first. Voice playback reads a written reply aloud: you press play, and nothing travels the other way. A live call keeps your microphone open, sends your speech away to be transcribed, answered and spoken back, and runs until one of you stops it. The first is a text app with a speaker attached; the second is a different product.
Nomi AI is unusually plain about the gap on its own pages: the phone icon in its chat produces voice messages rather than a live call, and its help documentation says a companion needs time to process what you said, so replies during a call are not instantaneous. That is what you will notice most. A few seconds of silence after every sentence feels nothing like a phone call with a person, and no app has closed that gap yet.
Which apps hold a call, and which only read replies aloud
Going by what the apps say about themselves, there are three groups, and the group tells you more than the marketing.
Live calls included in a paid plan. OurDream AI puts unlimited messages, audio messages and voice calls on both paid tiers, alongside 1,000 Dreamcoins a month for media — about as uncomplicated as voice gets here. It is story-led with strong pictures, its free tier has no text prompts and runs out quickly, and monthly billing is $19.99 against $9.99 a month billed yearly as of September 2026. Its Visit has the current plans. GoLove AI starts calls and a Live video mode from the chat screen, and Candy AI lists voice messages and phone calls with its paid plans, though its roughly 100 tokens a month are the same pot pictures and video draw on.
Voice, but no calls. This group is larger than the ads suggest. Kupid AI offers no phone calls at all: voice arrives as notes you receive, eight minutes a month on the lower plan and forty-five on the top, and sending your own is a top-plan feature. Lovescape AI includes voice messages with premium and never mentions calls; nor do MyLovely AI, HeraHaven AI, Luvr AI or Botify AI. Character AI gives away twenty-plus voice styles free but puts live calls on its paid plan, and it filters flirting.
Calls at the centre of the app. Muah AI is the clearest case: one subscription of about $20 a month as of September 2026 covers chat, voice, calls and pictures with no separate currency, and its live calls reportedly carry on the same role-play as the text. It also deserves the longest pause here: a 2024 breach reportedly exposed around 1.9 million email addresses together with their prompts, its age check is a tick-box, and most of its scores rate Poor. For a feature built on an open microphone, that weighs more than a flat fee. The ranking carries each app's card with its current price.
What a minute of talking costs
Voice is the most expensive thing these apps do per unit of time, which is why it gets metered when text is not. Three shapes of pricing cover nearly all of it.
The first is a per-minute rate in credits, and SoulGen AI publishes the clearest numbers in the category: a chat message costs 0.2 credits, a picture in chat 2, and a phone call 1 credit a minute. Its Pro plan includes 100 credits a month — roughly 500 messages, or 50 pictures, or 100 minutes of calls, in any mix, because it is all one pot. The second prices each voice item instead: Swipey AI charges 3 hearts a voice message and lists calls with Premium at $7.99 a month as of September 2026, and Uncensy charges calls in diamonds. The third is a flat fee with voice included, as OurDream AI's paid plans and Nomi AI's yearly plan do, and it is the only shape where a long call costs nothing extra.
A per-minute rate is not expensive by itself. It becomes expensive because a call is the one feature you use in large, unplanned chunks.
Nobody accidentally generates forty pictures, but a good conversation runs twenty minutes without anyone deciding it should — and on a metered plan that evening is a fifth of an allowance covering everything else. Our guide to what the tiers actually buy has the rest.
What voice you can hear without paying
Voice is usually the first thing a free plan withholds, because every spoken second costs the company money. GoLove AI is the exception worth knowing: text chat, voice messages and standard photos are free, and its chat quality is the strongest thing about it. The limits are real — female characters only, a generator that takes no text prompts, thin customization — but to hear a companion before spending anything, its Visit is where to start. Nomi AI gives four voices to audition, which makes the free plans list the place to begin on a budget.
What a free tier almost never includes is a live call. If calling is what you are shopping for, the shape of free you want is a trial of a paid plan rather than a permanent free account.
Before you open the microphone
A live call needs a permission that playback does not. Your speech is processed on a server, so a recording or transcript exists somewhere for at least a moment, under whatever retention policy the app publishes — read it before your first call. Hearing a character without speaking back needs no microphone access at all. Grant it deliberately, and set it to be allowed only while you are using the app: Android's guidance covers changing app permissions, including the microphone, and the equivalent sits in iPhone's privacy settings.
Which setup suits which reader
- You want to hear replies, not talk back. Playback is enough, and it is the one voice feature that reaches free tiers. GoLove AI's free voice messages do it without a card.
- You want long, unmetered calls. Take a flat plan and ignore the credit maths. Nomi AI's yearly plan lists unlimited voice chat and calls at about $8.33 a month as of September 2026, on top of the memory it is built around. It suits you badly if you want ready-made characters: every companion starts from a backstory you write, and the free tier is one companion with capped messages.
- You call occasionally. A per-minute rate beats a plan you underuse. At SoulGen AI's 1 credit a minute, two short calls a month barely register against an allowance bought for pictures anyway.
Settle before you subscribe which of the two you are buying. They share an icon and almost nothing else.
Frequently asked questions
Can you actually call an AI girlfriend app?
Some apps hold a live call with your microphone open; many more only read written replies aloud. OurDream AI and Candy AI list phone calls with their paid plans and GoLove AI starts them from the chat screen, while Kupid AI, Lovescape AI and Romantic AI offer none. Check the pricing page, not the handset icon.
Are AI girlfriend app voice calls free?
Very rarely. Playback turns up on some free tiers, including GoLove AI's and Character AI's voice styles, but a live call is almost always behind a paid plan, and free credits rarely stretch to call minutes.
Why is there a delay when an AI companion answers on a call?
Your speech has to be sent away, transcribed, answered by the model and spoken back, and each step takes time. Nomi AI's own documentation says replies during a call are not instantaneous. Expect a pause after each sentence.
