What AI girlfriend apps remember about you

Every app in this category says its companion remembers you. Only a few let you open the memory, read what is in it, and fix the parts that are wrong.

You told the character in week one that you work nights and cannot stand being called babe. Six weeks later both are gone, and the home page still says it remembers everything. What AI girlfriend apps remember is one of the murkiest parts of the category, and not because anyone is lying. The word covers two different mechanisms, and only a handful of apps let you look at either one.

What AI girlfriend apps remember, and what they only hold briefly

The first mechanism is the live conversation. The model re-reads a stretch of recent chat before every reply, that stretch is finite, and the oldest lines drop out as new ones arrive. Character AI's own documentation says it without decoration: as a conversation grows, the character may forget things you told it early on and did not repeat afterwards. Even the character's description is not exempt: the Definition field behind a character holds up to 32,000 characters, and the docs tell creators to put the important parts first, because the end may be truncated as the chat gets longer. Our piece on what character setup locks in has the arithmetic of how much room that description takes.

The second mechanism is a store sitting outside that stretch: a notes field, a memory list, a backstory, facts the app has pulled out of chat and keeps re-feeding. That layer survives a two-week gap, and it is the one most apps say least about. When an app advertises memory it is pointing at the second thing while you are experiencing the first.

The apps that let you read the memory

A few apps publish a memory you can open, and the difference shows the first time the companion gets a detail wrong.

a fact written into a notes field rides along with every later message; one said in passing has to survive the window on its own

Replika documents this better than anyone else here. Its help centre says memory is built on layers: part of it visible in a Memory tab, the rest a deeper system drawing on patterns from your overall conversation history. You open it by tapping the companion's name, then read, remove or add entries by hand. The help centre is candid about the limits too — it says the system works best left to run automatically, and that deleting entries may weaken recall. The catch is large here: Replika's conversations are filtered, so the clearest memory interface in the category belongs to the app least willing to use it for romance.

Nomi AI gives you a writable layer rather than a browsable one. Its own listing describes customizable backstories and Shared Notes as an extra layer of communication for shaping the companion's identity, and says each companion carries short and long term memory across its private and group chats. A fact can be typed in rather than hoped for. It also claims human-level long term memory, which is the company's wording rather than a measured result. The trade-offs are real: no ready-made cast to browse, since every companion starts from a backstory you write, and a free tier capped at one companion. If an editable memory is the feature you are buying, its Visit has the current plans.

The apps that promise it and show you nothing

Most of the category sits here. Candy AI says its companions are built with memory retention and remember your stories. OurDream AI says it uses advanced memory systems and remembers past chats. HeraHaven AI says the character learns your inside jokes, your dreams and your pet peeves. Kupid AI's home page makes no first-party claim at all; the only mention of remembering is a customer testimonial. Lovescape AI's home page does not raise memory, pointing instead at its content and retention settings.

None of that is dishonest, and an app with no memory tab may recall things perfectly well. The point is narrower: you cannot check it, and you cannot correct it. These apps put their engineering into pictures and video instead. Just do not buy an annual plan for the memory claim. The memory list collects the apps built around recall, and every card on the ranking shows what each one costs right now.

A memory you cannot read is a memory you cannot fix. The first time a companion confidently repeats something wrong about you, that stops being a technicality.

What a readable memory costs

Not much more than an unreadable one, which is the surprise. Nomi AI is free to start with no card, and its store listing shows plans at $9.99 and $15.99 a month, and a year at $99.99, about $8.33 a month as of October 2026. OurDream AI charges $19.99 monthly or $9.99 a month billed yearly as one payment of $119.88 as of October 2026, with 1,000 Dreamcoins a month on both tiers for media. Candy AI starts from $3.99 a month on the annual plan as of October 2026, with one pot of tokens covering voice, chat, images and video. The flat-fee apps are not the expensive ones here; the metered ones are.

If pictures matter more to you than recall, that is a legitimate trade, and OurDream AI's flat plan with a fixed coin allowance is the cleaner shape for it — its Visit lists what the coins buy. Its free tier takes no text prompts, so expect to pay to evaluate it.

Memory is not your chat log

These are separate systems, kept for different lengths of time. Replika's help centre says chat history is only available for the past four months and older conversations cannot be retrieved, while the companion's memory, personality and training are retained from the beginning. So an app can hold a fact about you that you can no longer find the conversation for. It runs the other way too: Replika says there is no way to delete your whole message history without deleting the account, though memory entries come out one at a time.

Under UK or EU rules there is also a formal route behind the in-app controls. The regulator's guidance on your right to get your data corrected covers asking an organisation to fix inaccurate personal data, and gives it one month to respond. A memory tab is faster, which is the practical argument for picking an app that has one. Our post on who else can see these conversations covers the rest.

Which memory suits which reader

  • You want to correct what it got wrong. Take an app with a visible, editable store. Nomi AI's Shared Notes and backstories let you write a fact in rather than repeat it until it sticks. It suits you badly if you wanted a catalogue of ready-made characters.
  • You mostly want pictures and video. Memory is secondary, so buy on the allowance and treat recall as a bonus. Candy AI and OurDream AI both sell a monthly coin pot; read what a video costs before committing to a year.
  • You want to see the machinery before paying. Character AI's persona and Definition fields are free to inspect, though its filtering rules out romance.

Whatever you choose, write the facts you care about into a field rather than into the conversation. Anything told to a companion once, in passing, is relying on the shortest-lived part of the system to survive.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI girlfriend apps remember past conversations?

Partly. Every app re-reads a stretch of recent chat before replying, and that stretch is finite, so older lines fall away. Longer-term recall depends on a separate store of facts — a notes field, a memory list, a backstory — that some apps publish and most do not.

Can you edit what an AI girlfriend app remembers about you?

On a few apps, yes. Replika has a Memory tab where entries can be read, added or removed, and Nomi AI has Shared Notes and a backstory field you write into. Most apps in the category give you no way to view or change what has been stored.

Why does the character forget something I told it last month?

Because it was only ever in the conversation. Unless the app moved that detail into a longer-term store, it stops being visible once the recent stretch of chat has moved past it. Writing it into a notes or backstory field is the fix that works across apps.
