AI girlfriend character setup: what you can't undo

The form asks for a name, a body, a personality and a backstory, and never says which of those answers you are stuck with. On some apps, one of them is permanent.

You have signed up, the app has put a form in front of you, and it wants a name, a body, a set of personality traits and a sentence about who this character is to you. Nothing on the screen tells you which of those answers you are stuck with. AI girlfriend character setup is the step most apps hurry you through, and on at least one popular app a field in that form is permanent while everything around it can be rewritten later. Five minutes of reading first saves a companion you abandon in a fortnight.

Two routes through AI girlfriend character setup

Before any field matters, there is a choice about whether you fill in a form at all. Apps here split into library-first and builder-first, and that split says more about an app than its pricing page does.

Library-first apps hand you a catalogue. GoLove AI's own site advertises more than 350 ready-made characters and describes a full customization creator — face, hair, body type, voice, accent, hobbies — as something it plans to launch, not something you can use today. You personalize by talking, not by filling in boxes. Character AI is library-first too, though it filters flirting and has no adult mode.

Builder-first apps put the form before the chat. Candy AI runs both routes at once: over 100 characters to pick from, alongside a creation flow for ethnicity, age range, eye colour, hairstyle, body features, a personality type — bubbly, calm, cheeky, nurturing — plus a voice and a few hobbies. Kupid AI pairs ready-made characters with a builder for hair, style, appearance and personality traits.

What locks in, and what you can rewrite

Slow down here: apps are not consistent about this, and almost none of them warn you.

Nomi AI has a genuinely permanent field, and its own beginner's guide says so plainly: you cannot change a companion's core personality traits after creation, though you can reshape or expand on them at any time in Shared Notes. Appearance and the initial interests stay adjustable. Shared Notes are where the long-form work happens — a backstory, plus notes for preferences, boundaries and the current scene — and Nomi's own update notes record the paid backstory allowance rising to 2,000 characters from 1,000. The trait list is a one-way door; the writing behind it is not.

Elsewhere almost everything is editable, and the useful question becomes who can see it. Character AI's creator guide breaks a character into a name, an avatar, a voice, a greeting and a definition. The greeting runs from 0 to 500 characters, cannot be blank in quick creation, and takes up to five alternatives to swipe through. The definition — the behavioural instructions — is optional, and a private-definition setting hides that field alone while the name and descriptions stay visible. SpicyChat AI works the same way: a name, a personality and a greeting, with visibility public, unlisted or private, so you can build in private and publish later.

Why a long character sheet can cost you memory

Here is the trade-off nobody mentions during AI girlfriend character setup. Everything you write into the form goes to the model with every message, and the model works inside a fixed context window measured in tokens. A character sheet is not a separate compartment; it competes with the conversation for the same space.

Two horizontal tracks, the lower one more than twice the length of the upper, each starting with an identical bright pink block joined by a dashed vertical line, the rest of each track filled with small purple ticks — five on the short track and many more on the long one
the same character sheet eats a quarter of a small free context and a sliver of a large paid one

SpicyChat AI is unusually open about the arithmetic. Its documentation recommends keeping a character within 900 to 1,100 tokens so there is capacity left for conversation, and its pricing page puts free accounts on a 4K-token context, with paid tiers raising that to 8K and up to 32K. Set those side by side and a thorough character sheet is roughly a quarter of a free account's working memory, spent before you say hello.

A longer character sheet does not make the character deeper. Past a point it just leaves less room for the conversation that was supposed to make it deep.

So write short at first. Put in the few things that change how replies read — how the character talks, what it cares about, what it should never do — and let the rest arrive through use. The memory list has the apps built around recall.

What customizing actually costs

On token-metered apps, setup is not free in the way a form usually is. Candy AI's own pages note that more detailed customization draws more tokens, and tokens are the same pot pictures, voice notes and calls come out of — roughly 100 a month on its entry plan, from $3.99 a month on a twelve-month term as of October 2026. Kupid AI's free coins do not stretch to one generated picture, so a character you built to look a particular way is one you cannot see without paying. Leave the appearance until last for that reason. Flat-fee apps avoid the question: Nomi AI's yearly plan runs about $8.33 a month as of October 2026 with no second currency.

Voice is the choice worth deferring: it is metered separately almost everywhere, and the icon rarely means what you expect — our guide to the handset icon covers which apps hold a live call and which only read replies aloud. The ranking carries each app's current price on its card.

Which setup suits which reader

  • You want to skip the form entirely. A library tells you within an evening whether you enjoy the category. GoLove AI is the cheapest way to find out: its free side covers text chat, lasting memory, voice messages and standard photos, with HD pictures from $4.15 a month on its annual plan as of October 2026. The limits are real — female characters only, no builder yet, thin customization — so it suits browsing better than world-building.
  • You want to write a character and have it stick. Nomi AI is built for that. Choose the core traits deliberately, because those you cannot take back, and expect to do the writing yourself: anyone wanting a character ready-made will find the blank form a chore, and the free tier is one companion with capped messages.
  • You want to build, tinker and publish nothing. SpicyChat AI keeps a character private while you work on it and keeps core chat free, from $4.95 a month as of October 2026 for the larger context. Accept the smaller free context, the occasional queue and no App Store app.
  • You want pictures of a character you designed. Budget for the media, not the setup. Candy AI and Kupid AI both pair a builder with generation, and the pictures are what the allowance goes on.

Before you fill in the form

  1. Find out what is permanent. One look at the app's help pages for its character fields answers this. If nothing is fixed, write freely; if the traits are, spend your time there.
  2. Write less than you want to. Three or four lines that change how replies read beat a page of biography competing with your conversation for context.
  3. Do it on the free side if you can. The gap between a trial and a free plan matters more at setup than anywhere else, and the free plans list shows which apps have one.

Frequently asked questions

Can you change an AI companion's personality after you create it?

On most apps, yes — the name, greeting, description and appearance stay editable. Nomi AI is the exception: its own guide says core personality traits cannot be changed after creation, although you can reshape them in Shared Notes. Check the help pages before you commit.

Do you have to create a character, or can you just pick one?

Plenty of apps are library-first. GoLove AI advertises more than 350 ready-made characters with its full creator still to come, and Candy AI and Kupid AI offer catalogues alongside their builders. Picking is the faster way to find out whether you like the app at all.

How long should an AI girlfriend character description be?

Shorter than most people write. SpicyChat AI's documentation suggests keeping a character within 900 to 1,100 tokens so there is room left for conversation, and its free accounts hold a 4K-token context, so a long sheet claims a real share of the working memory before the first message.
