AI girlfriend apps on the App Store: what changes

You searched the store, found almost nothing, and the few results looked oddly polite. That is written into the store rules, and it tells you where to look instead.

A tall wall with one narrow gap in it, a line passing through the gap from a box of four coloured bars on the left to a shorter box of three on the right, and the brightest pink bar stopped short of the wall by a red marker

You open the App Store, type the obvious search, and get a short list of apps that all look oddly polite. Then you read about one that sounds right, go to install it, and find there is nothing to install — just a website. AI girlfriend apps on the App Store are rarely the same product as the sites they share a name with, and the gap is written into the store rules. Which side of that line an app sits on decides what you can say to it and where you go to stop paying.

Why AI girlfriend apps on the App Store are thin on the ground

Both stores publish the rule in plain language. Google's developer policy says it does not allow apps that contain or promote sexual content, and extends that to any content or services intended to be sexually gratifying. An app whose selling point is unfiltered adult conversation does not squeeze through that, however the listing is worded.

Apple adds a second hurdle at your end rather than the developer's. Depending on where you live, you may be asked to confirm that you are an adult before downloading an app rated 18+, using existing account details, a credit card in your name, or a scan of a passport or government ID; debit cards are not accepted. That is a reasonable gate and a real one: what would have been an anonymous browser tab becomes a download tied to a verified identity.

So companies take one of three routes: no phone app at all, a filtered app in the stores with the unfiltered version on the web, or an Android app from their own website.

The pattern across the apps we list

Read our ranking with that in mind and it splits cleanly in two. The ones you can install from a store are the ones that filter. Replika runs on its website, on Android, on iOS and on Oculus headsets, with filtered content. Botify AI is on the web and both phone platforms, also filtered, and its Play listing notes the app contains ads.

The ones built for adult conversation mostly have nothing to install. Candy AI is browser-only; Nectar AI, GPTGirlfriend, SoulGen AI and Lovescape AI are websites, and Lovescape makes a selling point of there being nothing to download. SpicyChat AI takes the third route: an official Android app from its own site rather than Play, and no App Store app. If unfiltered conversation is what you are shopping for, the apps that allow it are mostly going to be browser tabs.

What the browser route actually costs you

Less than people expect. Adding a site to your home screen gives an icon that opens full-screen and sends notifications, which covers most of what an app does. Candy AI is built that way: a browser service run by EverAI Limited in Malta, for adults 18 and over, with no store app on either platform.

What you get back is an app not shaped by someone else's content rules. Candy AI keeps text chat unlimited on every paid plan even at a zero token balance, from $3.99 a month on the twelve-month plan as of September 2026. The catch is the second economy: plans carry about 100 tokens a month, pictures, voice and calls all draw on them, and an extra 100-token pack reportedly ran about $9.99 at that date, so a heavy month costs several times the headline. Its ready-made library is thin, and most refunds must be requested within 24 hours. Its Visit has the plans.

SpicyChat AI shows the middle route. Its help pages say there is no App Store app, so on an iPhone you add the site to your home screen while Android users install the official app from its website. Free accounts keep a 4K-token context, which paid tiers raise to 8K and then up to 32K, and the core chat stays free. They can queue when the service is busy, there is no video, and the memory you are there to test sits behind the paywall. From $4.95 a month as of September 2026, through its Visit.

The store is not a quality filter. It is a content filter: it sorts apps by what they will let you say, not by how good they are.

The one on our list that does both

If an installed app matters and you still want adult conversations available, Nomi AI covers both. It runs in the browser and has apps for iPhone and Android, and it has no adult toggle: conversations stay safe for work unless the backstory you wrote points elsewhere, which is how it sits in the stores at all. Sign-up needs no payment details, and the free tier is one companion, capped messages and two images.

The reasons it will not suit everyone are structural. There is no catalogue — every companion starts from a backstory you write in the third person, which is slow if you wanted to pick a face and start talking, and pictures reportedly take 30 to 45 seconds each. Pay yearly or not at all: as of September 2026 it is $15.99 a month, $13.33 on the quarterly plan, or $99.99 a year, about $8.33 a month. One oddity before you install from a store — its App Store listing also sells packs of Nomi credits that its public pages do not explain. Its Visit has the plans.

Where the bill lives, and where the cancel switch is

This is the part that costs people money. A subscription belongs to whoever took the payment: buy inside a phone app and the store holds it, buy on the website and the site holds it. The two do not talk to each other.

A store tile and a browser window side by side, each with a subscription bar beneath it and a dashed arrow running back up from the bar to its own window, while the dashed path joining the two bars across the middle is struck out with a red cross
a subscription is cancelled at the door it came in by, and nowhere else

Nomi AI spells it out because it sells all three ways: you cancel through the platform where you bought the plan — the web, the App Store or Google Play — and deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. Candy AI, web-only, points to a Settings and Unsubscribe path inside the account and uses a discreet merchant name on card statements: good for privacy, and an easy way to miss a renewal you meant to stop. Our guide to what cancelling does and does not do covers the rest.

The stores' one real advantage is that the payment and the cancellation sit somewhere you already check. What neither route changes is what the company does with the conversations afterwards, a separate question with much the same answer on both sides of the wall.

Which door suits which reader

  • You only install from a store. That narrows things to filtered apps or to Nomi AI, whose content follows the backstory rather than a switch. Do not expect a store app from one advertising no filters.
  • You want adult conversations without filters. Plan on a browser tab and a home-screen shortcut. Candy AI and most of the without-filters list work that way because the rules leave no alternative.
  • You are on Android and want an icon. SpicyChat AI installs from its own website — a real app, outside the store's review and its refund system too.
  • You want billing where you already look. Buy through a store where the app offers it, accept the filter that comes with it, and check which platform billed you before you cancel.

If that does not settle it, the ranking shows how each app is reached, what its free side includes and what it costs.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there so few AI girlfriend apps on the App Store?

Both stores ban sexually explicit content outright, so an app built around unfiltered adult conversation cannot be listed as it is. Companies either stay in the browser, ship a filtered version, or hand out an Android app themselves.

Is the website version different from the phone app version?

Often, yes. Where a company ships both, the store version is the one that has to meet the store's content rules, and it may sell different extras. Check each side before you pay.

If I subscribe in the app, can I cancel on the website?

No. You cancel wherever the payment was taken, in the app store that billed you or on the site you signed up to, and deleting the app cancels nothing. Find the renewal date and the biller on day one.
